Layman's explanation:
Anatase was named in 1801 for the Greek word extension. Brown in color, the titanium oxide has a sub metallic luster and is easily altered in nature to cause pitted specimens. This mineral results from the natural crystallization of titanium dioxide. The mineral can be found in the veins and cavities of granites and other igneous rocks in regions of the USA, England, Austria, Brazil, France, and Switzerland. Anatase is a rare collector's gem, is often used as a minor ore of titanium, and as a mineral specimen.
