Erythromycin is an antibiotic that is used to treat a wide range of medical ailments from acne to sexually transmitted diseases. Erythromycin inhibits the propagation of proteins in bacterial cells. The streptococcus strain of bacteria is susceptible to erythromycin, but staphylococcus strains of bacteria have become particularly resistant to erythromycin. Erythromycin has also been associated with several prenatal defects such as pyloric stenosis, a constriction of the passage between the stomach and small intestine.
