LSD was first prepared in 1938 in the Sandoz pharmaceutical-chemical research laboratories in Basle, Switzerland by Albert Hofmann. He noticed peculiar symptoms while synthesizing the compound, such as a feeling of drunkenness and felt the need to pursue further research towards this. LSD works by changing the balance of brain activity. There is currently medicinal research being conducted to evaluate the effects of the drug in helping with paralysis.
