Ecstasy

MDMA is a synthetic amphetamine derivative used predominantly by humans for recreational purposes.

Other names: MDMA, 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine, N-Methyl-1-(3,4-(methylenedioxy)phenyl)-2-aminopropane
Layman's explanation: MDMA was synthesized in 1912 and patented in Germany by Merck in 1914. In the 1950s the drug was suspected to be researched by the chemical warfare departments of the CIA and the Army. It was soon forgotten about until the mid 1970s when it reemerged as a psychedelic drug. MDMA works by affecting the chemical levels of serotonin in the brain, a neurotransmitter which can alter emotions. MDMA also affects body temperature, pulse rate, and blood pressure. MDMA is a recreational drug that causes an extreme mood lift, increase in energy, and sensitivity to lights, sounds and to touch. MDMA can also cause appetite loss, visual distortion, and nystagmus. Some common names of this drug are ecstasy, adam, XTC, E, X, and rolls.
