Norcholestane

Norcholestane is a steroid derivative of the norsteroids.

Chemical Formula: C₂₆H₄₆O₉

Other names: (24R)-27-Nor-5a-cholestane-3b,4b,5,6a,7b,8,14,15a,24-nonaol

Layman's explanation: 24-norcholestane is found in Monterey shale, extracted from the Neogene Gulf of California. It is a saturated hydrocarbon with a steroid backbone. The compound has been used as a biomarker, to constrain the age of geological samples. Their biological precursors are unknown, although there is evidence to support that their abundance increased with diatom evolution. Norcholestane is also used as a possible biomarker of ozone exposure, and found in a dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) derivative.
