NorcholestaneNorcholestane is a steroid derivative of the norsteroids.
Chemical Formula:
C26H46O9
Other names:
Layman's explanation:
24-norcholestane is found in Monterey shale, extracted from the Neogene Gulf of
California. It is a saturated hydrocarbon with a steroid backbone. The compound has been used as a
biomarker, to constrain the age of geological samples. Their biological
precursors are unknown, although there is evidence to support that their abundance
increased with diatom evolution. Norcholestane is also used as a possible
biomarker of ozone exposure, and found in a dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH)
derivative.
