Vitamin D2 is a colorless to white crystal that is odorless with a bitter, metallic taste and it is insoluble in water. Vitamin D2 is used to promote healthy bones and teeth helping your body to maintain the proper levels of calcium and phosphorus. It is also used to help boost the immune system and is sometimes used in the treatment of psoriasis, refractory rickets, familial hypophosphatemia and hypoparathyroidism. The synthetic form of vitamin D2 is prepared from ergosterol, which occurs in yeast and fungi, by UV radiation in a suitable solvent. It is also obtained from yeast and fungi which synthesizes it from simple sugar such as glucose. Some symptoms of vitamin D2 intoxication include irregular heartbeats, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, decreased appetite, constipation, weakness, headache, and a metallic taste in the mouth.
